What is an IP address?
Every device connected to the Intenret - whether it's a computer, games console, mobile phone or something else - is assigned an IP address. These are commonly four numbers between 0 and 255, separated by periods (.), and are sometimes referred to as IPv4 addresses. They'll look like 1.2.3.4, and no two devices can have the same address at the same time.
Most of us are hidden from IP addresses - when you typed in or clicked on a link to www.redgalaxyuk.com, your computer used a technology called DNS (Domain Name System) to translate the website address into an IP. Once your computer knows the IP, it uses this to communicate with the web server hosting this website and download the relevant files.
Dynamic IP vs static IP
If you've shopped around for broadband Internet packages you may well have seen these terms. You can generate 4,294,967,296 unique IP addresses using IPv4; if you take into account that we have a global population of 6.7 billion there clearly isn't enough IP addresses if every person had one IP address to themselves. So Internet Service Providers (ISPs) will generally issue a dynamic IP address which will change every time you reconnect; the IP address will be picked out of a pool of IPs they have been allocated with.
Static IP addresses work differently - no matter how many times you disconnect and reconnect to the Internet, your ISP will always give you the same IP. Some companies will include this as standard, others will charge a little extra per month. Static IP addresses can be a security risk, as once a hacker knows your IP they'll be able to keep trying to hack your computer, so always ensure you use a firewall. They are, however, the best option if you want to host a web, email, database or even games server.
